The ACD 2005 –1 is a British designed and manufactured 14 pin SOIC power supply chip aimed at the general PSU marketplace but with distinct advantages in many applications, especially Audio. It embodies many sophisticated and unique features, yet is affordably priced and simple to use. Many of the power supply problems, which are simply addressed by the ACD 2005-1 would be quite costly to tackle using conventional methods. There is no comparable chip available on the market today. |

The preferred power supply architecture uses the planar transformer (flat, small, compact and light) compared to conventional toroidal or E core transformers. The coils are etched and part of the power supply PCB, therefore highly repeatable in volume manufacture. The planar transformer is extremely low profile enabling the PSU to fit into a 20mm space. Practically there is no limit to the power rating achievable. A 100 watt audio Class D amplifier and ACD 2005-1 PSU would not require any form of forced cooling whereas an equivalent conventional linear amplifier and power supply would require a minimum of 1 fan and a large heat sink. |

ACD 2005-1 produces a switching waveform which gives extremely clean switching, complete absence of ‘shoot through’ or ‘ringing’. Shoot through occurs in typical power supplies in the transition period between switching sequences caused by noise induced miss-firing of gate drive circuitry enabling the MOSFETS on either side of the H bridge to short between supply rails. Ringing is decaying oscillations brought about by high shoot through currents induced in stray capacitances and inductances. Both phenomena are serious handicaps in conventional power supply design, causing heat and unreliability problems. 90% of all power supply failures are due to shoot through. In discerning applications such as audio amplifiers, instrumentation and DSP related products where clean supplies are imperative these issues must be addressed and require a solution such as the ACD 2005-1. |

The combination of ACD 2005-1 and Planar Transformer virtually eliminates radiated RFI and EMI issues by the elimination of shoot through. This results in an ultra-efficient power supply design, which runs considerably cooler in comparison to conventional supplies. Cost saving opportunities from the reduction in heat sinking and possible elimination of fans are a major financial benefit. |

In switching power supplies, shoot through is also caused by false switching due to stored energy in the transformer primary or stray inductances. The ACD 2005-1 eliminates this. |

The ACD 2005-1 will sense the output voltage and increase this as required to the reference rail voltage, thus allowing fully regulated audio power supplies to be constructed. A further attribute of the ACD 2005 – 1 is its eco-friendliness. The device only allows the power actually required to be delivered. In no-demand periods it will shut down altogether, only reactivating when new demand is called for. |
